Castells Colony Park: A Model of Sustainable Water Management under the Construction Management of SOCOTEC

Fri 19/04/2024 - 13:21

Castells Colony Park, located in the Las Cortes neighborhood of Barcelona, has been transformed into a benchmark green space thanks to its recent renovation, carried out under the construction management of SOCOTEC

With the aim of becoming a true green lung for the neighborhood, the park has incorporated innovative solutions for sustainable water management and the use of water resources.

At the heart of the park lies a circular plaza surrounded by community urban gardens, a children's playground, and a senior fitness area. The urban gardens allow residents to grow their own food, while the children's playground provides a recreational space for the little ones. The senior fitness area is equipped with exercise equipment to encourage physical activity among the older population.

"To combat drought, 80% of the surface area of Castells Colony Park combines natural grass, artificial grass, and permeable pavement."

The natural grass used is a hardy variety that does not require large amounts of water. In addition, a drip irrigation system has been installed to optimize its consumption. The remaining flower beds in the park also have drainage soil, which facilitates the filtration of rainwater into the subsoil.

The remaining flower beds in the park also have drainage soil, which facilitates the filtration of rainwater into the subsoil.

20% of the park's surface is covered with a special porous pavement that facilitates the return of water to underground aquifers. The absence of grids allows rainwater to drain across the entire surface of the park, maximizing its collection and use.

In addition, the park has been designed without sewers or drains to enhance this constant drainage.

Through its design and construction, Castells Colony Park stands as an exemplary model of sustainable water management in an urban setting. The park not only provides a green space for citizens but also contributes to environmental protection and the fight against drought.

SOCOTEC has contributed its expertise in urban projects from a sustainable perspective, highlighting the importance of sustainable water resource management.
