SOCOTEC promotes water sustainability through safe and efficient water regeneration plans
- Client: La Sénia WWTP Irrigation Community (CRSDEN)
- Location: La Sénia, Montsià, Tarragona
- Year: 2025
The La Sénia Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) represents a pioneering project in sustainable water management in the Montsià region. This project is especially relevant in the current context of Catalonia, where periodic droughts aggravated by climate change require innovative solutions for the reuse of water resources.
SOCOTEC has developed a Reclaimed Water Risk Management Plan (PGRAR) that ensures the safe use of treated water for agricultural activities, contributing significantly to the region's water availability and reducing pressure on scarce natural resources.

Comprehensive risk analysis in water regeneration
SOCOTEC has developed a holistic approach to assess the risks associated with water reclamation, considering multiple factors that go beyond purely technical analyses. Our analysis includes the evaluation of hazardous health agents such as bacteria, viruses and helminths, as well as environmental factors that could affect surface or groundwater bodies.
The study considers risks derived from external factors such as poor end-user practices, extreme weather conditions and operational aspects of the distribution system. This comprehensive methodology ensures that all potential scenarios are properly considered and mitigated.
Implementation of safety barriers in water reclamation
A highlight of the project has been advice on the implementation of safety barriers. SOCOTEC evaluated the requirements of the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation and determined that, given the current characteristics of water use, it was not necessary to add additional disinfection systems.
This optimisation has not only led to significant economic savings for the client, but also demonstrates SOCOTEC's ability to provide efficient solutions tailored to the real needs of each water regeneration project.

Water Reclamation Regulatory Compliance
The project is based on European Directive 2020/741 and Royal Decree 1084/2024, regulations that establish the requirements for the safe reuse of reclaimed water. SOCOTEC has interpreted and applied this new legislation, classifying water quality according to categories A, B, C and D established in the regulations.
This regulatory framework not only guarantees the safety in the use of water regeneration, but also allows customers to access state subsidies for water reuse projects, adding additional economic value to regulatory compliance.

Contribution to water sustainability
The La Sénia project represents a sustainable management model that contributes directly to the water reuse policy in Catalonia. The successful implementation of this plan makes it possible to reduce dependence on scarce natural water resources, especially relevant in the Mediterranean context where water availability is a critical factor for agricultural and urban development.
Water regeneration is positioned as a fundamental solution for adaptation to climate change, allowing agricultural activity in the Montsià region to be maintained with guarantees of safety and environmental sustainability.
