SOCOTEC engineering, responsible for the construction management, in collaboration with the UTE (Colomer-Rifà), attended the inauguration of the new Mas del Plata wastewater treatment plant in the Tarragona municipality of Cabra del Camp.

The wastewater treatment plant, which is now fully operational, has a treatment capacity of 580 m³/day and will serve a population of 3,335 inhabitants, guaranteeing the sanitation needs of the area where 60% of the municipality's inhabitants reside.

The treatment system of the wastewater treatment plant is based on a prolonged aeration process with continuous denitrification, with two concentric reactor-decanters. The water line of the plant includes a compact pre-treatment, a distribution box, two secondary treatment lines (each with a secondary decanter and a biological reactor) and an outlet box.

The sludge line has a sludge and scum pumping station, as well as a gravity thickener. The plant also has a wastewater pumping station and a trickling filter.

The water treated by the wastewater treatment plant is reintroduced into the Fonollosa stream, contributing to the environmental improvement of the Francolí river basin.

SOCOTEC Civil Engineering Director

Jordi Rosich

The start-up of the wastewater treatment plant represents a significant step forward in the management of wastewater in the area. According to Rosich:

"It ensures an appropriate and sustainable treatment of wastewater, protecting the environment, objectives that SOCOTEC provides with integrative engineering".

The investment for the future

The wastewater treatment plant building houses an administrative and control area, an electrical switchgear room, a warehouse, a blower room, a polyelectrolyte and service water preparation room, and a dewatering room. The total investment in the construction of the plant was 3.1 million euros, financed by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA)
