SOCOTEC Participates in the Auto-BIM Pilot Project: A Technological Advance for Efficiency in Construction

Wed 21/12/2016 - 11:20

SOCOTEC brings its extensive experience in BIM data management to the Auto-BIM project pilot. This innovative initiative seeks to revolutionize the way data is captured, processed, and integrated in indoor environments for construction.

The Auto-BIM project, framed within the Retos-Colaboración 2016 program, is being developed by a consortium formed by VIAS y Construcciones, SOCOTEC (BAC Engineering Consultancy Group), the Applied Geotechnology Group of the University of Vigo, Aplitop, ApliCAD, the TIDOP Research Group of the University of Salamanca, and AIMEN Centro Tecnológico.

The main objective of the Auto-BIM project is to develop a new methodology for the automated acquisition, processing, and management of three-dimensional spatial data indoors, using an autonomous mobile robot. This technology will make it possible to dispense with GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) systems, which often have limitations in indoor environments.

SOCOTEC: Key Experience in BIM Integration

SOCOTEC, with its extensive experience in BIM data management, plays a crucial role in the project. The company is responsible for integrating BIM technology into the quality control process, defining and validating the necessary parameters, and establishing acceptance and/or rejection criteria for the geometries obtained by the robot.

A Collaborative Effort for Innovation

The success of the Auto-BIM project depends largely on the synergies between the skills and knowledge of each of the partners. The Applied Geotechnology Group of the University of Vigo, with its experience in the design of data collection assistance software and the Aplitop tool, is responsible for the treatment of point clouds, including their filtering, alignment, and referencing. On the other hand, ApliCAD and the TIDOP Research Group of the University of Salamanca process and adapt point clouds, transforming them into BIM models. Finally, AIMEN Centro Tecnológico completes the team with the development of the autonomous robotic system, a fundamental piece for the project.

Open Communication: Key to Project Efficiency

A Milestone in Innovation for the Building Sector The pilot test of the Auto-BIM project in a multi-family housing block in Badalona marks a major milestone in the search for innovative solutions for data management in the construction industry. The results obtained so far are promising and pave the way for wider adoption of this technology in the future.
