The structural engineering of the Real de San Carlos bullring restoration in Colonia, Uruguay, was awarded the 2023 Gubbio Prize in the Latin America and Caribbean section.

Project by Sitio Arquitectura,

Structural Engineering by SOCOTEC

The prize, awarded by the National Association of Italian Cities of Historical and Cultural Heritage (ANCSA), recognizes the best interventions and best practices in the management of heritage areas in the region.

The intervention at the Real de San Carlos bullring was a structural engineering project with a careful and respectful approach to the historical heritage of the building. The works focused on the comprehensive restoration of the structural consolidation of the building, including the perimeter wall, the metal structure, the stands, the perimeter flooring and the central arena.

SOCOTEC's specialized engineering team conducted a structural assessment to determine the condition of the existing structure and the possibilities for its consolidation. A BIM model was developed for the executive project using a laser scanner, which facilitated the understanding and spatial management of the building. SOCOTEC also conducted a testing and inspection campaign of the existing construction systems to diagnose the condition of the elements.

The restoration of the Real de San Carlos bullring is an example of a respectful heritage intervention, where SOCOTEC's engineering contribution has successfully preserved the original building and has reached a contemporary intervention respectful of both formal and functional values, as well as those of constructive and symbolic value.
