SOCOTEC is actively involved in the Barcelona City Council's Climate Plan, contributing to the project and construction management of the new Districlima plant at Bogatell.
By reusing sand extracted from the construction site, Llevant and Mar Bella beaches are being regenerated, promoting a circular economy and restoring coastal ecosystems.
This initiative aligns with SOCOTEC's global strategy of developing sustainable and efficient projects.
In line with this vision, the company has led the project for the new Engie plant, a key infrastructure to accelerate the city's energy transition and strengthen its energy autonomy.
By generating renewable energy from local sources, the dependence on fossil fuels is reduced and the environmental impact is minimized.
The 3rd Districlima Plant
The Districlima Plant number 3, located in Bogatell, is the third facility in the heating and cooling network promoted by Districlima.
With a total investment of 44.13 million euros, this 21 MWf underground plant represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient Barcelona.
SOCOTEC has collaborated on this project, developing the plant's project and carrying out the construction management, including safety and health coordination.
This type of infrastructure allows the city to advance in the energy transition and take on an active role as a producer and manager of its own resources.
Through its participation in this project, SOCOTEC demonstrates its commitment to sustainability, leveraging local energy resources and promoting a circular economy by reusing construction materials to regenerate Llevant and Mar Bella beaches.
The plant's proximity to consumption centers represents a great advantage for the city's energy self-sufficiency, reducing energy losses in distribution and minimizing environmental impact.
Circular economy and beach regeneration
Thanks to efficient management of construction waste, 8,000 cubic meters of high-quality sand have been recovered.
This sand will be used to regenerate Llevant and Mar Bella beaches, areas particularly affected by coastal erosion.
This initiative not only contributes to the project's sustainability but also improves the city's natural environment.
Collaboration for beach regeneration
In total, 48,000 cubic meters of sand will be used to regenerate three Barcelona beaches: Sant Sebastià, Llevant, and Mar Bella.
The remaining sand comes from excavations for the construction of the Ciutadella del Conocimiento.
