A key project for the decarbonisation of the United Kingdom

The Cottam Solar Project represents an unprecedented energy transformation in the UK.

Located on the border between Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, this infrastructure project of national importance (NSIP) comes from the site of the previously operated Cottam coal-fired power station, which was closed in 2019. With a generation capacity of up to 600MW, the project will be able to supply 180,000 homes with clean and renewable energy.

The approval of the Development Consent Order (DCO) by the Secretary of State for the Department of Energy, Security and Net Zero in September 2024 marks a critical milestone for the UK energy transition. This project will not only replace 30% of the generation capacity of the old coal-fired plant, but it will do so with solar technology, free of emissions and without the need for public subsidies.

Geotechnical technical assistance: the basis for project success

SOCOTEC has been selected as a strategic partner to provide specialized technical assistance in the geotechnical field, an essential component to ensure the technical feasibility and structural safety of solar and energy storage facilities.

Our team of specialists has carried out a comprehensive field testing and analysis campaign in the four project areas (Cottam 1, 2, 3a and 3b), strategically located to the south-east and north-east of Gainsborough. This technical assistance includes detailed soil characterization to support the design of foundations and infrastructure for connection to the national electricity grid.

In projects such as the Cottam Solar Project, where installations are spread over multiple areas of land, specialized geotechnical testing is decisive. The thermal resistivity of the soil, for example, directly determines the ability of underground cables to dissipate heat and efficiently transport the 600MW of energy generated. Inadequate geotechnical analysis can compromise decades of operation.

SOCOTEC's Specialized Geotechnical Services

SOCOTEC's technical assistance in the Cottam Solar Project covers a wide range of field and laboratory trials, specifically designed for the needs of large-scale renewable infrastructure projects:

Dynamic penetration tests to evaluate ground resistance

Excavations for direct visual inspection of soil strata

Determination of Undrained Shear Strength of Cohesive Soils

Soil thermal capacity analysis for the design of underground cabling systems

Complete study of soil corrosivity to ensure the durability of metal installations

Characterization of compaction and bearing capacity for access roads and work platforms

Comprehensive analysis of the mechanical and physical properties of the ground

Thermal Soil Characterization: Key to Electrical Infrastructure

One of the most critical aspects in solar projects of this magnitude is the design of the underground electrical infrastructure. SOCOTEC has carried out specialized thermal resistivity tests both on-site and in the laboratory (DRY-OUT Test), providing essential technical assistance for the sizing of cabling systems.

The underground cables that will carry the power generated from the project's four zones to the Cottam National Substation are to operate safely and efficiently for decades. The thermal resistivity of the ground determines the dissipation capacity of the heat generated by the cables, a critical factor to avoid overloads and ensure maximum energy transmission efficiency.

Our analyses have made it possible to identify the thermal properties of the ground in different humidity conditions, providing accurate data for the design of the cable corridors and optimizing the configuration of the electrical installations in all phases of the project.
