At SOCOTEC we have carried out precise stock cubing with laser scanner technology for port logistics optimisation

SOCOTEC has developed an innovative project for the cubing of materials using laser scanner mining technology for the precise measurement of salt and potash stockpiles in the port facilities of Barcelona.

This project arises from ICL's need to obtain accurate and regular measurements of its stocks of materials stored in the hangars of the port of Barcelona, before proceeding to their loading and export to different countries and international customers.

Laser technology to provide innovative solutions to complex problems

The project presents unique challenges inherent in the nature of the materials and storage conditions.

Salt and potash stockpiles are large, loose materials whose summits are inaccessible to traditional measurement methods. In addition, the irregular geometries acquired by these materials generate shadow areas where the laser scanner mining has reach limitations.

To overcome this problem, SOCOTEC has developed a methodology that combines laser capture with integrated digital photography. This technology allows the cubing model to be adjusted to the actual geometric shape of the stockpile, compensating for the limitations of direct access.
